Elegant from A to B – locomotion and mobility

In the city center, many attractions are within easy walking distance of the main train station/Schlossplatz:

Among others, the Old Castle (Württemberg State Museum), the market hall, the State Gallery and the House of History.

Other destinations such as the zoological-botanical garden Wilhelma, the television tower, the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche museums or the burial chapel on Württemberg Hill can be easily reached by bus or (subway) train.

The VVS app

The VVS app can be helpful for your stay. It allows you to call up connections from the nearest stop to your desired destination (with a map) or to order discounted mobile tickets.

Sehenswürdigkeit Zahnradbahn Stuttgart
Funicular at Marienplatz

First highlight: the Zacke

The Zacke, as the cogwheel train is popularly known, takes you steeply up to Degerloch. The lower stop is at Marienplatz.
You can reach the cogwheel train with the U1, U9, U34 light rail lines and the 41 and 43 bus lines. (From Rotebühlplatz, take the U34 light rail in the direction of Südheimer Platz in three minutes).

Of course, you can also travel the other way from Degerloch to the city center. An experience in either direction.

Historische Standseibahn Stuttgart
Historic funicular

Second highlight and TOP recommendation: the funicular

The funicular, also known as the Merry Widows’ Railway or the legacy-seekers’ express, takes you up to the forest cemetery in the creaking, historic wooden-class ambience of the 1920s.

Famous Stuttgart residents are buried here. With its old trees and tranquillity, this cemetery is a good place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

A little excursion that you should definitely plan in!

Historische Straßenbahn
Historical tram

Take a ride in the historical tram of the tram museum on Sundays

I still remember well how I rode into the city with my mother as a small child.
This ride is worthwhile for anyone who has time on Sundays and is enthusiastic about old trams.
The tram museum itself is also interesting without such a ride.

How to get there
Bad Cannstatt S-Bahn station S1, S2, S3, regional trains
Mercedesstraße light rail stop U1, U2, U11 lines
45, 56 bus lines Veielbrunnenweg stop (Tram Museum)

Mobility Extra: RegioRad Stuttgart

I like to use the RegioRad for trips to the parks, forests or along the rivers.

Here you can rent or drop off a bicycle or e-bike at many locations in the region at affordable prices.

However, since you need an app and to register for this, you should sign up before you rent a bike for the first time – preferably before you arrive.
